President Obama's daughter Malia
runs with new 'First Dog' Bo on
Apr. 14, 2009.

U.S. President Barack Obama and his family have welcomed a new addition to the White House -- their dog, Bo.

The six-month-old black and white Portuguese water dog made his debut Tuesday at the White House, where the Obamas spent time petting and walking him. President Obama told reporters the family is really pleased with Bo and that Bo is a "good-looking dog."

Mr. Obama promised during his campaign to get a dog for his daughters Malia and Sasha. The Washington Post newspaper recently reported that Bo is a gift from Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, or Porties.

The president said Bo will be allowed in the Oval Office and that he will help walk the dog.

The Obama girls named him Bo because their cousins have a cat by the same name, and because first lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley -- as in Bo Diddley, the late rock n' roll musician.

Some information for this report was provided by AP.
